The College uses different approaches to access students' grasp of the subjects they have received through formal contact hours. Examination is one of the useful processes which we adopt to support the College's teaching and learning goals.
Examination in this policy refers to a formal, supervised assessment activity which comprises at least 25% of the overall mark and which normally takes place in the mid semester, or at the conclusion of a semester or formal teaching period, used to assess student learning outcomes.
Formal examinations are centrally administered and processed by the Examination Committee.
These are general guidelines for the Examinations:
The formal examination will be for the mid-semester or final examination. These dates are normally announced in the beginning of the semester in the Session Dates.
Students shall not be required to take more than two examination papers, or other assessment activity whether centrally administered or not, per day.
Formal examinations held during the examinations period will normally be between two to three hours duration per subject.
The examination may be open-book or closed-book in nature, or a combination of both.
The examination may be in written form or involving laboratory works, or a combination of both.
A mandatory reading time of FIVE (5) minutes shall be given for all examinations, which shall be additional to the specified examination duration of the paper.
Students who cannot sit for an examination due to medical or other acceptable reason will be granted exemption. It is the onus of the students to inform the College, supplying all necessary documents to support their case within three (3) days after the examination date of the paper. They may be allowed to re-sit the paper at a time as specified by the Examination Committee.
Replacement examination shall only be given for the Final Examination, but not for the Mid-Semester Examination.
Students will be permitted entry to the examination room ten (10) minutes prior to the start of the examination time.
Only authorized examination aids such as books and calculators, as specified by the proctors, may be brought into the examination room.
Students must place all textbooks, notes, bags, etc., at the location specified by the proctors.
Mobile phone and any communication device must be completely switched off and left in the bag. No communication device can be put on the table.
Students are required to produce their College Identification Card in all examinations and must place the card on the right corner of their desk where it may be clearly seen by proctors. If students cannot produce the IC, they must get a temporary ID from the Administrative Office. They shall be permitted to sit the examination and the proctor shall record the student's name and signature on the attendance slip and inform the Examination Committee.
Students may complete the cover page of the answer book and the attendance slip but must not write in the answer book until advised to do so. During reading time a student may make notes on the examination question paper or, in the rough paper provided.
If students think that there is a mistake in the examination paper they are to report their doubts quietly to the proctors.
Conduct
Students shall obey the proctor's instructions throughout the duration of the examination.
Students requiring any materials or helps should raise a hand until being attended to.
No student shall leave the room until an hour of the examination has elapsed, or during the last fifteen minutes of the examination. No student may be admitted to the room after the first hour has elapsed.
Students will not be re-admitted to the examination room after they have left it unless they have left under approved supervision.
Students shall remain seated and be quiet throughout the examination.
During an examination a student shall not cheat in any ways. Any irregular practices by a student may result in academic penalties. See the policies on Academic Integrity.
Conclusion
Students must hand in a script with their student ID written on it even if he/she has not answered any question of the examination.
At the conclusion of the examination all students must remain seated until all scripts and cards have been collected and counted. Students will be told when they may leave by the proctors.
Students are not allowed to take any examination papers or scripts out of the examination room.
