Which program is best for my son/daughter? Many parents and guardians have repeatedly asked this question. Here are a few steps that we hope would help you in coming to an informed conclusion on your own.
Step 1
A few questions for you to ask and discuss with your child are,
What is the interest of my child? What type of career does my child want to enter in the future?
e.g. does your children wants to become a computer scientist, a psychologist, an accountant, a marketing executive, a TV producer...?
What is my child good at? What are his/her strengths?
e.g. Is he/she good in mathematics, or is he/she inclined towards arts?
Since the program that your child study will likely determine his/her future career, we firmly believe that as far as possible, the program of study should matches the interest and strengths of your child.
Step 2
Based on your answer in Step 1, you have to consider whether your child have the necessary foundational training to handle that program. Different program has different set of entrance requirements which the candidate must possess before he/she can be considered. Some requirements are more stringent, others less so.
Here are some examples of the requirements:
To become a computer scientist
Candidate must be very strong in mathematics and physics, at least up to SSC/ICSE/GCE "O" Level.
To become an accountant
Prior knowledge in accounting and economics, at least up to SSC/ICSE/GCE "O" Level are good to have, but not necessary!
To become a psychologist
Candidate should preferably have at least SSC/ICSE/GCE "O" Level biology knowledge.
To become a systems analyst
Candidate should have reasonable competency in mathematics up to at least SSC/ICSE/GCE "O".
If your child's prior training matches his/her interest, then, it is to our opinion that he/she should pursue the program.
The College recognizes candidates may not have the opportunities to do certain prerequisite subjects either due to misinformation in planning their previous high school studies, or the constraints of the education system they are in. Their potential may not be fully tapped. Our bridging courses will assist the students in overcoming these shortcomings.
Step 3
We believe most guardians will be able to come to a decision after going through Step 1 & Step 2 above. For some of you, however, you might have concerns such as the following:
What is the future employment prospect?
We believe there are employment opportunities for every field of study. However, if you are overly concerned with this aspect, then you might want to consider an alternate program if you feel that the future prospect of your child's interest is less bright.
Can my child find job overseas?
The degree that your child eventually obtains will be from our partner universities, whose qualifications are recognized worldwide.
